June 21 is National ASK Day, a day to bring special awareness to the injuries and death caused by unintentional gun violence towards children, which occurs far too frequently in this country.
This year's theme for ASK Day is "Ask on ASK Day." We are encouraging parents all over the country to ASK if there is a gun where their children play. Even if you have ASKed in the past, we encourage you to do it again this ASK Day. Just like you check the batteries on your smoke detector every January 1st, we encourage parents everywhere to ASK on the first day of summer, June 21st. Firearms are acquired over time, and summer is a time when children are more likely to be playing at someone else's home.
So we encourage you to spread this message in your community any way you can. Write letters to the editor of the local paper. Hand out brochures, hang posters, or plant flowers in memory of the victims of gun violence. Get together with your local PTA, church group or any parents organization and ASK-get your cell phones out, and call everyone you know and ASK!
Remember to get the media involved! Whatever your event is, call your local newspaper or television station to cover it. The more that people in your community see others ASKing, the more likely they are to ASK themselves. Help us change the attitudes in our communities and make this an easy question to ASK!
